Protective clothing against rain EN 343
The EN 343 standard is always written with two digits, such as 3/3. The first is waterproofness, the second breathability, each rated from 1 to 4. A 4/1 jacket is a perfectly watertight plastic bag in which you sweat; a 1/4 breathes very well and lets the rain through. These are the two extremes to avoid.
For outdoor work all day long in Belgium, aim for 3/3 at least. Below that, the jacket ends up being worn open — and an open jacket protects against nothing.

What to know before choosing
Waterproofness: how long you can stay in the rain
The rating measures the resistance of the material and above all of the seams. A class 3 or 4 jacket has heat-sealed seams: that is where water gets in first on a cheap jacket, well before the fabric.
Breathability: what decides comfort
It is the rating people look at last and the one that spoils everything. A worker who gets wet from the inside is as cold as one who is wet from the outside. If your teams move a lot, breathability takes priority over the last point of waterproofness.
Rain and high visibility add up
A parka can be both EN 343 and EN ISO 20471. In that case, the high-visibility marking rules apply: neutral areas only.
Marking without downgrading the garment
This is the point on which we turn down orders. Protective clothing marked just anywhere is no longer protective clothing.
What EN 343 guarantees
Resistance to water penetration and breathability, each rated from 1 to 4. A site rain jacket should be chosen at 3/3 at least.
On a waterproof material, marking must never pierce the membrane: embroidery goes through the fabric and creates as many micro-holes as there are stitches. On a rain jacket, DTF transfer is therefore the answer — it is applied on the surface, without perforating, and it costs less. When embroidery is required all the same, it is done on an added patch, never on the back.
Recommended technique here: DTF transfer, from €5.00 per piece. No set-up fee. See the full price grid

Frequently asked questions
Why avoid embroidery on a rain jacket?
Because every stitch pierces the waterproof membrane. On an EN 343 jacket, that guarantees leaks in the end, in the worst place — the shoulder or the back. DTF transfer is applied on the surface and perforates nothing.
What does 3/3 mean?
The first digit is waterproofness, the second breathability, both rated from 1 to 4. 3/3 is the right compromise for prolonged outdoor work.
Is a softshell jacket EN 343?
Almost never. A softshell is water-repellent: it handles a shower, not a day of rain. If your teams are outside in all weathers, you need a garment declared EN 343.
