Antistatic clothing EN 1149

The EN 1149 standard concerns clothing that dissipates electrostatic charges. It applies wherever a spark can set an atmosphere alight: petrochemicals, painting, grain silos, solvent storage, some clean rooms.

The principle is simple: a network of conductive threads woven into the material carries the charges away instead of accumulating them. Which means that anything that insulates this network — a large area of plastic film, for example — defeats it.

What to know before choosing

The outfit protects only when complete

Antistatic clothing must cover any non-compliant clothing worn underneath, and stay closed. An antistatic jacket left open over an ordinary fleece sweatshirt no longer protects: the charge builds up on the inner layer.

Footwear is part of the system

The charge must be able to reach the ground. Antistatic safety shoes are essential: without them, the compliant garment is of no use.

Multi-standard, almost always

Antistatic clothing is rarely alone: it is often also flame-retardant (EN ISO 11612) and sometimes protects against the electric arc (EN 61482). It is this combination you should look for, not the standard on its own.

Marking without downgrading the garment

This is the point on which we turn down orders. Protective clothing marked just anywhere is no longer protective clothing.

What EN 1149 guarantees

Dissipation of electrostatic charges: explosive atmospheres, petrochemicals, silos, clean rooms.

A large solid area of transfer insulates the conductive network: on these garments, marking therefore stays small and is applied on the placements allowed by the manufacturer. A chest logo, yes; a fully printed back, no. We check this before quoting, and we prefer to offer you smaller marking than an outfit that no longer dissipates.

Recommended technique here: DTF transfer, from €5.00 per piece. No set-up fee. See the full price grid

Frequently asked questions

Can a logo cancel the antistatic protection?

A large solid area of film insulates the conductive network of the fabric. A chest logo of reasonable size is not a problem; a fully printed back is. We apply the areas allowed by the manufacturer.

Do you also need antistatic shoes?

Yes. The garment dissipates the charge, but it must reach the ground. Without antistatic shoes, the system is incomplete.

Can these garments be machine-washed?

Yes, under the manufacturer's conditions, and the number of cycles is limited as for any protective garment. Many are designed for industrial laundering.
